Achievements

To improve the living conditions of the 7000 families around the Lake Turkana basin and the communities around the Baro-Akobo-Sobat River basin, the ECOFISH-IGAD project seeks to leverage the potential of these two basins. In this context, the project provided the following supports to date:

  • IGAD region Fisheries Coordination Platform (IFCP) Established and 2 annual platform meetings carried out

Activities

  • Support the establishment and implementation of fisheries co-management system
  • Promote and support bilateral cooperation for sustainable management of shared fisheries resources in each of the two basins
  • Socio economic assessment and support to gender inclusivity and integration of local knowledge in fisheries management

Outputs

  • Finalize, adopt and establish basin-wide fisheries co-management system for each of the two basins with the needed “collaboration and communication arrangements” among key stakeholders for sustainable fisheries exploitation, equitable access to fisheries resources, and efficient fisheries utilization.​​

RESULT 2: Strengthened capacity to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the EA-SA-IO region

8 STRATEGIC ACTIONS

  1. Support inter-regional, inter-agency and inter-governmental cooperation in EA-SA-IO
  2. Support exchange of experiences & development of coordinated approaches to improve MCS of small scale marine fisheries
  3. Organise joint regional sea & air patrols with Authorities in continuation of the Joint Regional Patrol Programme of IOC-PRSP
  4. Facilitate the interoperability of systems & exchange of data at regional levels
  5. Support capacity building for regionally harmonised enforcement, compliance & prosecution procedures
  6. Provide capacity building and technical assistance on catch Certification & traceability scheme
  7. Encourage synergies with other regional initiatives
  8. Establishment of risk assessment frameworks with the support of EFCA

RESULT 3: Concrete fisheries management and governance initiatives in small-scale inland and marine fisheries are supported with the possibilities of replication at the regional level.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

To improve the living conditions of the 7000 families around the Lake Turkana basin and the communities around the Baro-Akobo-Sobat River basin, the ECOFISH-IGAD project seeks to leverage the potential of these two basins. In this context, the project provided the following supports to date:

  • IGAD region Fisheries Coordination Platform (IFCP) Established and 2 annual platform meetings carried out
  • A coordination platform for each basin and 4 meetings of these platforms’ members have been organized
  • Pilot Fisheries Co-Management Units established in the three project target countries
  • 4 studies to assess the potential contribution of the two basins and the needs for their efficient exploitation have been carried out
  • Considering the results of these studies, the fisheries co-management plan for each basin has been updated and validated
  • Over 200 fisheries experts and community leaders have been trained for the effective implementation of the fisheries co-management plan
  • Experience Sharing Visit on Fisheries Co- Management of Transboundary Shared Water Resource fisheries directors and experts of the three countries
  • 2 policy briefs generated and disseminated
  • Co-organized with the whole ECOFISH Program knowledge share fair over 200 participants
  • Regional ToT training for Fish Post-Harvest Loss Handling, Quality Control and Marketing for 35 trainers
  • Project activities promoted in various types of media and promotion materials produced.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Support the establishment and implementation of fisheries co-management system
  • Promote and support bilateral cooperation for sustainable management of shared fisheries resources in each of the two basins
  • Socio economic assessment and support to gender inclusivity and integration of local knowledge in fisheries management
  • Capacity building of fisheries stakeholders
  • Monitoring and evaluation of planned activities.
  • Support to cross border fisheries management for the respective basins through establishment of platforms
  • Facilitate the interoperability of systems and exchange of fisheries data across the two basins
  • Improve fisheries assessment, data collection and data management in support of more evidence based Basin-wide fisheries policies and management measures
  • Support to climate change smart fisheries
  • Support capacity building for bilaterally harmonised Enforcement, Compliance and Prosecution procedures in the fisheries sector.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:

  • Finalize, adopt and establish basin-wide fisheries co-management system for each of the two basins with the needed “collaboration and communication arrangements” among key stakeholders for sustainable fisheries exploitation, equitable access to fisheries resources, and efficient fisheries utilization.​​
  • Capacity building and integrated data base establishment that will address climate smart, gender responsive, socioeconomically equitable, and ecologically sustainable fisheries development and management for each of the two basins.
