ECOFISH strives to ensure the sustainable management of these assets by putting in place policies to handle them effectively, by protecting them and by promoting good fishing practices.

RESULT 1: Enhanced regional policies and institutional frameworks to secure more sustainable fisheries management and contribute to marine biodiversity and climate resilience.

RESULT 2: Strengthened capacity to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the EA-SA-IO region

8 STRATEGIC ACTIONS

  1. Support inter-regional, inter-agency and inter-governmental cooperation in EA-SA-IO
  2. Support exchange of experiences & development of coordinated approaches to improve MCS of small scale marine fisheries
  3. Organise joint regional sea & air patrols with Authorities in continuation of the Joint Regional Patrol Programme of IOC-PRSP
  4. Facilitate the interoperability of systems & exchange of data at regional levels
  5. Support capacity building for regionally harmonised enforcement, compliance & prosecution procedures
  6. Provide capacity building and technical assistance on catch Certification & traceability scheme
  7. Encourage synergies with other regional initiatives
  8. Establishment of risk assessment frameworks with the support of EFCA

RESULT 3: Concrete fisheries management and governance initiatives in small-scale inland and marine fisheries are supported with the possibilities of replication at the regional level.
