Achievements

To date, the KECOFISH project has reported the following outputs, to assess the situation and find innovative solutions for improving food security and livelihoods in Coastal Kenya and East Africa

  • Seven (7) Beach Management Units were trained in mobile fisheries data collection

Activities

  • Local successful SSF prototypes will be scaled to deliver organised and effective co-management in two important regions in coastal Kenya (Shimoni-Vanga and Lamu seascapes)

Expected Outputs

  • New innovative solutions to remaining challenges will be co-created with communities in Shimoni-Vanga and Lamu, Kenya providing the evidence and prototypes to support regional scaling.

RESULT 2: Strengthened capacity to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the EA-SA-IO region

8 STRATEGIC ACTIONS

  1. Support inter-regional, inter-agency and inter-governmental cooperation in EA-SA-IO
  2. Support exchange of experiences & development of coordinated approaches to improve MCS of small scale marine fisheries
  3. Organise joint regional sea & air patrols with Authorities in continuation of the Joint Regional Patrol Programme of IOC-PRSP
  4. Facilitate the interoperability of systems & exchange of data at regional levels
  5. Support capacity building for regionally harmonised enforcement, compliance & prosecution procedures
  6. Provide capacity building and technical assistance on catch Certification & traceability scheme
  7. Encourage synergies with other regional initiatives

RESULT 3: Concrete fisheries management and governance initiatives in small-scale inland and marine fisheries are supported with the possibilities of replication at the regional level.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

To date, the KECOFISH project has reported the following outputs, to assess the situation and find innovative solutions for improving food security and livelihoods in Coastal Kenya and East Africa

  • Seven (7) Beach Management Units were trained in mobile fisheries data collection
  • Handing over mobile fisheries data collection equipment including (mobile phones, measuring board, tape measure, raincoat, torch, weigh scale and stationery) to Lamu and Kwale County Fisheries Department.
  • Data collection systems are in place in both counties of Kwale and Lamu and are generating crucial fish catch data.
  • 24 Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLA), with 476 members, were selected.
  • 15 Beach Management Units were assessed using the WWF’s CSO Capacity assessment tool.
  • 16 Beach Management Units members received capacity building assistance in leadership and governance from 25 trainers trained by the project
  • The team has embarked on a mentorship programme with the ToTs further train the BMU leadership on governance with an agreed mentorship timetable. The project team regularly conducts follow-up and monitoring of the landing sites to gauge the effectiveness of this model of project implementation.
  • WWF Kenya in partnership with Finance Earth have been testing the feasibility of solar-powered ice provision in Kenya and have developed a pilot project business case
  • The project has advanced in mapping out the possible areas of best practices for sustainable fisheries activities. The project has also been engaged with the regional SWIO (Southwest Indian Ocean) team to map out the cross-cutting themes which the wider team can explore/learn from as best practices.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Local successful SSF prototypes will be scaled to deliver organised and effective co-management in two important regions in coastal Kenya (Shimoni-Vanga and Lamu seascapes)

EXPECTED OUTPUTS:

  • New innovative solutions to remaining challenges will be co-created with communities in Shimoni-Vanga and Lamu, Kenya providing the evidence and prototypes to support regional scaling.
  • Community-led, low cost fisheries data collection system implemented and informning fisheries management in at least 10 Beach Management Units.
  • A total of 20 Village Savings & Loan Associations (VSLAs) (10 in Lamu and 10 in Shimoni-Vanga) are established and have increased financial literacy and inclusion, facilitating increased economic resilience in coastal communities.
  • Capacity building for at least two joint Collaborative Fisheries Management Areas (JCMAsà, consisting of 10 Beach Management Units covering 90,000 hectares.
  • New and innovative prototypes to address post-harvest losses and improved market access are co-developed with the communities in Lamu and Shimoni-Vanga seascapes.
  • Facilitate at least 4 cross learning visits through exchanges between co-management stakeholders and communities to facilitate further scaling with Kenya region.
