In brief:
- E€OFISH is supporting Madagascar and Kenya in setting up a system that will enable them to obtain wider information on the contribution of fishing to the national economy. This system, known as BEFSA, was launched in Kenya from 18 to 20 April, and in Madagascar from 7 to 18 May 2023. Click for further information.
- E€OFISH shares its experience at the regional symposium on illegal, unreported and unregulated industrial fishing from 5 to 7 June 2023. See the presentation.
- Two national workshops were organised to strengthen inter-agency collaboration in fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance. The first was held from 24 to 26 April 2023 in Mozambique and the second from 29 to 30 June 2023 in Madagascar.

INSIGHT
Screenshot 2023-07-11 at 10.01.11
With Africa's population expected to reach 1.7 billion in 2030 and 2.5 billion in 2050, supplying the population with food at current per capita consumption levels (7.5 kg/capita/year from marine fisheries) will require 13 million tonnes of marine fish in 2030 and almost 19 million tonnes in 2050. These figures give an idea of the scale of the production gap: around 6 million tonnes in 2030 and 12 million tonnes in 2050.
